Introduction
Jess Arthur was born in Northumberland in
1979. After graduating from Edinburgh University, a scientific
degree and a stint working in a London Office and in the city she
decided to have a career change. Jess won a place to study at
"Hampstead School of Decorative Arts" for a professional training
course in Trompe L'Oeil decoration and mural painting.
Jess has had commissions throughout the UK in places open to the
public, museums and in many private houses. She has worked in the
Middle East and has been working extensively in Oman. She has on
going projects for the Ministry of Tourism at various times during
the next few years.
Jess is skilled in painting Trompe L'Oeil murals (examples
are shown in the gallery) and decoration
(imitation of frescos, 3-D architecture eg stone walls and columns,
mouldings and sky ceilings). The Trompe L'Oeil work is often carried
out on walls, but can also be painted onto canvass or furniture.
Other skills gained during the course include the creation of
Faux Marble and Wood,
Exotic Finishes, Antiqueing,
Distressing, Gilding,
Stencilling, Glazes and
Wall Effects.
There are many advantages of Trompe L'Oeil murals, not only
are murals a form of art, they are fun, individual, giving the
illusion of space in a small area and brightening a dark room.
The faux marble and wood are cheaper alternatives to buying the
real thing. Some types of marble are scarce and are extremely
expensive, it is wonderful to be able to offer an alternative at an
affordable price.
