Trompe l’oeil (French for deceive the eye) an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions. The viewers eye accepts these images as real in the context of the surroundings.
Trompe l’oeil can give the illusion of space and light and is often used to create symmetry in a room that might not have symmetry. It can also be used to disguise dull things like cupboard could be painted with book shelves on a cupboard to conceal a television. Beautiful china can be painted on a trompe l’oeil shelves.
